Arrived

Hello,
I have safely arrived in Georgia. These past few days of driving cross-country have been fun and crazy, but I am glad for a break.

(By the way, you can see my progress from CA to GA in my instagram feed.)

So, now that I have been here a few days, I am getting used to the weather and sights. Going from desert to green forests can take some getting used to. Now, I have much to do, but I’ll take it a day at a time, as should you.

Upcoming Trip

Tomorrow I begin my journey to the east coast. The reason for the trip is because over the summer I will stay with my family in Georgia, then in August I’ll be moving to Erskine College.

Over the course of this week long trek to Georgia, you can follow me on Instagram or Twitter. There I will be posting pictures of my progress. To follow me on Twitter or Instagram, go to the links provided on the right-hand column of the page.

Stay tuned for updates!

New Mediums

As you may know, I take an interest to many different kinds of art. Presently, I will be discussing an unusual form, the tattoo.

History of Tattoos: According to the Smithsonian, the oldest example of tattooing dates at around 5,200 years ago on the “Iceman” from the area of the Italian-Austrian border. The word tattoo comes from the Tahitian word “tatu” which means “to mark something”.

Modern Day Tattoos:

In present date, it is amazing to see the kind of crowd these modern day tattoo studios draw even in the suburban cities. This art has been made extremely popular by the famous, high profile people in music and sports who sport their tattoos with extreme pride. Tattoo has completely renovated itself as the modern day art with introduction of all the modern safety measures and ample amount of variety in colors and designs. The modern tattooing also varies from the primitive from of this art in designing. With introduction of more colors and modern techniques, the tattoo industry has emerged as one of the most popular section of the fashion industry. People today associate it more to the cosmetic and sentimental value than anything else. All those who get it done due to sentimental reasons either do it to sport their special love for their beloved, their religion or anything else. Those who go for cosmetic reasons get it done for either hiding skin discoloration or scars. However most of the people sport it for exhibiting their fashion forwardness. – See more at: http://bodyart.iloveindia.com/tattoo-history/modernday-tattooing.html#sthash.gk3hVVu3.dpuf

Now, I neither condone or criticize the art of tattoos. I am, as they say, on the fence. I have seen beautiful work, but I have also seen “pieces” that are, well, the opposite of appealing. So, this introduces the topic of how tattoos are removed.

Most of the time, individuals do research into tattoo artists and think ahead before making the commitment to get a tattoo. However, there are instances when a person might have reason to regret their tattoo decision. In those cases, they either live with the ink or turn to removal techniques.

The Removal: There are a few different methods of tattoo removal. They are as follows:

Laser Removal: It is most certainly the most common form of tattoo removal. According to New Look, a leader in the field, “Laser tattoo removal works by focusing laser energy to break up the pigment and color in [the] tattoo.” The fragments of ink are then removed by the immune system. This is a process that is most effective when completed multiple times. To learn more about laser removal, see New Look’s Tattoo Removal Guide: http://www.newlookhouston.com/TattooRemoval.html

Intense Pulsed Light Therapy: Intense Pulsed Light Therapy, or IPL, uses high intensity light in pretty much the same manner as laser removal. IPL is said to be less painful than laser therapy, but there are some that do not recommend the method. It may work better, but there is a chance of scarring, skin irritation, blisters, and similar occurrences. Not only that, but it may be more expensive.

There are other methods of tattoo removal, but they are risky and far more painful. Some of which include dermabrasion (sanding the skin away), and excision (skin removal and graft, if necessary).

So of all the methods, I would recommend laser removal.

The idea that someone would go through the pain and money to get a tattoo and then simply have it removed later confuses me. However, I have actually met people who have gone through lifestyle changes, and the tattoo was no longer appropriate. That, I can understand. I suppose that is why it is good to have a service available to remove such mistakes.

I suppose this goes to show that not everything is final. Although tattoos are intended to be permanent, it is still possible to have them removed. Likewise, there may be something so completely wrong that you have done, to the point where you feel as though you are irredeemable. Yet, God still wants you! His sacrifice can and will nullify your sins.

Anyway, that is tattoos for you -SA

Considering Essays

Hello,

Over the course of my high school career, I have written some essays that I am quite proud of. So, I am considering posting a few of them. Some might be personal, while others are literary analysis of novels or plays. The decision gravitates around whether I post them on the “home page” or in a separate tab.

Either way, the essays are for looking, not touching. I frown upon plagiarism; so please, if you use any direct quotes, cite me!

Stay Tuned! -S.A.

Graduation Speech

As you may be aware, I have recently graduated. For the ceremony, I, a valedictorian, was asked to speak. Here is my speech:

Before anything else, I would like to recognize those that have helped each of us, as students, get where we are today. We could not have developed as we have without our family, friends, and teachers who have made this journey possible. For me, I would like to say that without God, my life would have gone down a very different path.

That being said, I want to quickly tell you about myself. As you already know, thanks to the generous introduction, my name is Sarah Ashbrook. I have been with CAVA since 7th grade and this school has provided me opportunities that few others could have. Due to the flexible nature of the daily class schedules, I was able to spend time with family that lived out-of-state, while still being able to succeed in school. I was never “locked away” from the world, though perhaps somewhat sheltered, but my parents and faith has afforded me a strong moral backbone that I will retain throughout college, as I pursue a major in Ecology.

Now, class of 2014, while you know a bit more about me, I realize that this graduation event will quite possibly be the first and last time we meet, due to the circumstances that make our school so unique. However, what is unique is that which in turn makes us strong.
You know, when you first tell someone that you attend an online school, you get one of two responses:

  • The first is a sympathetic, “Oh, honey,” while they are privately wondering why you voluntarily chose to be a hermit.
  • The second is the “you are sooo lucky” that is shortly followed by the naïve beliefs that we get to wake up super late and finish our work incredibly early, while still maintaining a perfect GPA. I don’t know about your situation, but I had to work to get where I am today.
  • And that’s why I think this has helped us all, because now we know how to work independently and we work hard. We’re prepared for our futures.

Keeping that in mind, I know without a doubt that we have had some shared experiences, you and I. Whether it be the frustrations of internet connection problems, the occasional scrounging around the house for something to eat, blackouts, or the sometimes inconvenient K12 website updates. We have made it through this thing called “High School.” And, although we may not have experienced all of the glitz and glamor of the “traditional” high school experience (prom, homecoming, senior pranks, peer pressure, “who needs ‘em”), we, instead, know that for us high school will NOT have been the best years of out lives; those times are in our future. We came to learn and experience; now we can go forth to share that knowledge.
“Education is improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than you found it.” – Marian Wright Edelman

In conclusion, I have three bits of advice for all you Graduates, coming not only from me, but also my mentors:

  • Stay true to yourself and your values
  • Always do your best at whatever life throws at you
  • Pay attention to the advice of your elders; they have lived and learned the hard way so you don’t have to

“Every accomplishment starts with the decision to try” says Gail Devers, and Thomas Edison states that “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”

We are young; we have the world at our fingertips and whether we know where we will be next year or not, go out courageously and make a change!

“Dreams, they don’t work unless you do!”
